Sens. Cruz, Cotton, Rep. Gallagher Introduce Iran Sanctions Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today joined Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) in introducing a resolution to oppose lifting sanctions on Iran. Cosponsors of this resolution also include Sens. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), John Thune (R-S.D.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), and 19 other members of the House of Representatives.

The members released the following statement after introduction:

"The U.S. must maintain sanctions on the Iranian regime until it abandons its nuclear ambitions and ends its supports for violence and terror around the region. Iran took advantage of weak policies during the Obama administration, and President Biden must not repeat those same mistakes."

In 2019, Sen. Cruz helped introduce a similar resolution to reaffirm support for U.S. policy barring Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons and to reject sanctions relief.

Sen. Cruz has led the fight against the Iran Nuclear Deal since it was first negotiated. Since the U.S. withdrawal from the deal, Sen. Cruz has pushed for an end to oil waivers, an end to nuclear waivers, and for invoking the U.N. snapback mechanism to restore international sanctions on Iran. Last year, Sen. Cruz applauded the Trump administration for enforcing snapback sanctions on Iran and finalizing the end of the Iran Nuclear Deal.
