Sens. Cruz, Braun, Colleagues Introduce Bill To Ensure Dignified Burial for Aborted Fetal Remains

HOUSTON, Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) joined Sens. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) in introducing the Dignity for Aborted Children Act, a bill which would enforce guidelines for the dignified handling of aborted fetal remains and penalties for failing to respect the sanctity of human life. “Harvesting the remains of murdered unborn babies is despicable,” Sen. Cruz said. “Every unborn child is a precious gift from God and we must respect the sanctity of life. I am proud to co-sponsor this bill to establish and enforce guidelines for handling aborted fetal remains in a dignified way.”

“The discovery of thousands of fetal remains in an Indiana abortionist's home horrified every American who respects the sanctity of life, and highlighted a disturbing trend that Indiana has taken the lead in rectifying,” said Senator Braun. “All human remains, regardless of stage of life, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and I'm proud to introduce the Dignity for Aborted Children Act to ensure that grotesque collections like Dr. Klopfer’s can’t be allowed to happen ever again.”

“I will always fight to protect innocent life and ensure all children are treated with dignity,” said Senator Young. “The recent discovery of over 2,200 fetal remains in the home of an Indiana abortionist proves there is a deeply disturbing problem with our current system. That’s why I joined a group of Senators to introduce the Dignity for Aborted Children Act to ensure the bodies of the unborn are treated with respect.”

“An unborn child is a precious human life. Ensuring a dignified burial for aborted babies is a matter of human decency,” said Senator Steve Daines.

“The gut-wrenching news of the Indiana abortion provider’s callous disregard for human life serves as a stark reminder that we must protect and defend life,” said Senator Joni Ernst. “We cannot be a society that tolerates actions like Dr. Klopfer’s, and this bill will ensure the remains of all human beings, in every stage of life, get the dignity and respect they deserve.”

“This individual’s actions are utterly disgusting and disrespectful to human life as a whole. Every child’s life should be valued, and I’m proud to support the Dignity for Aborted Children Act to give these lives the respect they deserve,” said Sen. Rick Scott.

“The dignity of human life remains unchanged regardless of a person’s age at his or her death. It is heartbreaking to see what occurred in Indiana earlier this month. By requiring that the remains of unborn children be properly disposed of, we will never again see such a tragedy,” said Senator Marsha Blackburn.

“A human life—especially a child’s—is sacred,” Inhofe said. “Recently, we’ve seen disturbing cases that show us yet again that the abortion-on-demand industry has no respect for the dignity of human life. These babies deserve a proper burial. To think that someone would compound the evil of abortion through degrading lives in this manner is horrifying.”

The Dignity for Aborted Children Act would:

  • Require abortion providers dispose of the remains of unborn children just as any other human being. Failure to do so is punishable by a fine and up to 5 years in prison;
  • Require consent form so the mother can choose to retain possession of her unborn child or allow the provider to cremate or inter the unborn child. Failure of the provider to execute these forms is punishable by civil penalty.

The Dignity for Abortion Children Act has been endorsed by the following organizations:

  • Susan B. Anthony List
  • March for Life
  • The Family Research Council
  • National Right to Life
  • Concerned Women for America
