Cruz News: July 9, 2018

July 9, 2018

Greetings,

Last week, Americans reflected on the precious gift of independence our Founding Fathers fought for 242 years ago. The signing of the Declaration of Independence demonstrated to the world that our God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would never again be infringed. We must never take these rights for granted, and we must never forget the sacrifices men and women have made for this country to make it a beacon for freedom, and a shining city upon a hill for the rest of the world to follow. May we always give thanks to those who protect us every single day.

As Texas continues to rebuild stronger than ever, I was pleased the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) announced this week its Disaster Supplemental Funding Plan, which will provide almost $5 billion in federal support to the state and in particular the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. This is a tremendous step for our state down the road to recovery. It includes funding to study a new flood prevention project in the Buffalo Bayou basin to support the Addicks and Barker reservoirs, as well as evaluating a third reservoir, construction funding for the Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay coastal protection project, and funding to complete the study of the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration project, which many refer to as the Coastal Spine. Read more about the specific provisions here.

As we continue to rebuild from the unprecedented devastation from Hurricane Harvey, we must also take all steps necessary to prepare for the hurricane season ahead. For those seeking information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or use the federal and state resources listed here. For those seeking preparedness information and resources, please refer to the federal and state resources listed here.

Please read below for an update from this last week.
