Sens. Cruz, Cornyn Applaud HUD Announcement to Award Disaster Funding to Texas

December 3, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced its commitment to allocate nearly $240 million in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds to help Texans repair housing, businesses, and critical infrastructure damaged by multiple flooding events in South Texas and Tropical Storm Imelda. In response, U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) issued the following statements applauding HUD's announcement of these CDBG-DR funds:

"After working hard with Senator Cornyn to secure these funds for the Rio Grande Valley and parts of Southeast Texas, I am glad to see HUD award this much-needed support for long-term disaster recovery," Sen. Cruz said. "Time and time again, in the face of disaster, we've seen Texans unite to help one another recover and rebuild following unprecedented flooding. I am grateful for HUD allocating these funds, which will not only help Texans in the aftermath of these floods, but also help our local communities better prepare for natural disasters down the road. Today's announcement is just one step in the process, and I urge HUD to eliminate any unnecessary delays to ensure that this support is available to Texans as soon as possible."

"These resources will make a big difference in helping Texans recovering from the flooding in South Texas and Hurricane Imelda get back on their feet," Sen. Cornyn said. "I applaud the Administration for supporting Texas families and businesses who are working hard to return to normalcy after these natural disasters."

In May, Sens. Cruz and Cornyn joined Senate colleagues in sending a letter urging HUD Secretary Carson to expedite the release of the first round of disaster funding for Texans in South Texas impacted by flooding. Read more about the announcement here.
