Sen. Cruz Issues Statement on the 40th Anniversary of the Iran Hostage Crisis

November 4, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued a statement recognizing the 40th anniversary of the Iran Hostage Crisis:

"Today marks the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Iran Hostage Crisis, when thugs backed by the Ayatollahs seized Americans working in Iran and held them hostage. Fifty-two of the hostages were held captive for 444 days, until January 20, 1981, when President Ronald Reagan was inaugurated.

"The fact that the hostages were released the day President Reagan took office is not a coincidence, because weakness cowers in the face of strength. What happened 40 years ago today and what happened 444 days later serves as a reminder that tyrannies and corrupt regimes diminish in the face of strength and truth - including Iran.

"Forty years later, I applaud President Trump's leadership in standing up to Iran's corrupt regime and will continue urging the administration to rip up the catastrophic Obama-Iran nuclear deal, which has enriched Iran with billions of dollars to build up its nuclear program and sponsor global terrorism, once and for all."
