Sen. Cruz: I Believe Every Child in America Has a Right to Have Access to an Excellent Education

Unveils Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act in press conference with Secretary DeVos, Rep. Byrne

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today participated in a press conference with U.S. Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, and Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) where they unveiled details of their Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act. The bill will provide a federal tax credits for donations to state-run educational scholarships, and expand elementary and secondary education, as well as access to apprenticeships and postsecondary workforce education for students and families across the country.

Later today, Sen. Cruz will introduce the bill in the Senate. Watch Sen. Cruz’s full remarks here. An excerpt is below.

“I believe school choice is the civil rights issue of the 21st century,” Sen. Cruz said. “What does that mean? It means, if you care about civil rights, if you care about fighting for the future of every kid in America then you care about school choice. I believe every child in America has a right to have access to excellent education. It doesn’t matter what your race is; it doesn’t matter what your ethnicity is; it doesn’t matter how much money you have; it doesn’t matter where you live. We are fighting for every single child in America to have the right to get excellent education.”

“This legislation also provides for apprenticeships and for workplace development so that if you want to go and get a job in the trades, and if you want to go and get a job and join a union, if you want to go and get a job in a factory, that you can get steps, training, to work towards that career.”

This morning, Sen. Cruz, Secretary DeVos, and Rep. Byrne penned an op-ed in USA Today outlining the provisions of the bill. Read the full op-ed here.
