Congress Passes Critical Harvey Relief Legislation

H.R. 3823 Mirrors Cruz-Cornyn-Rubio Senate legislation

September 28, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today introduced legislation that would deliver temporary tax relief to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. The Disaster Tax Relief and Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2017, passed today by the House and Senate, includes the text of the bill sponsored by Sen. Cruz, and cosponsored by Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

“By providing significant tax relief for those with extensive property damage, storm survivors will be able to keep more of their hard earned money as they rebuild,” Sen. Cruz said. “I am grateful for the overwhelming, bipartisan support for the victims of the hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, and in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and will continue working to ensure that storm-ravaged areas receive the federal assistance they need to recover and rebuild.”

On September 7, Congress passed the H.R. 601, Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, 2017 sending an initial payment of $15.25 billion to supplement Harvey relief efforts along the Texas Gulf Coast. These funds immediately targeted areas hit by the storm, and focused on initial clean-up and rebuilding.
