Sen. Cruz Discusses Expanding Trade and Economic Opportunity with Texans in Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley

Latest leg of Texas tour includes stops in Laredo, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, and Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – On Monday and Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) visited with constituents in Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley. In Laredo, Sen. Cruz held a roundtable discussion with members of the Laredo Development Foundation, where he discussed NAFTA renegotiation and his efforts to further expand trade. Later in Edinburg, Sen. Cruz met with local agriculture leaders and farmers, before holding a town hall with Royal Technologies employees in Mission. Later in the day, Sen. Cruz toured Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge following a meeting with city officials, and toured Rich Products Corporation, in Brownsville. There Sen. Cruz met with executives and employees to discuss his efforts to expand economic opportunity across the Lone Star state.

When asked about NAFTA renegotiation in Laredo, Sen. Cruz reiterated his efforts to expand trade and open up markets in both Canada and Mexico.

“I think [modernizing and updating NAFTA] could be a good and positive thing," Sen. Cruz said. "If the focus of NAFTA renegotiation is expanding international trade - opening up markets with Mexico and Canada, I think that’s a good thing. I have urged the President and the administration to use NAFTA renegotiation in a manner that allows more American small businesses, farmers and ranchers to sell more of their products and that puts American jobs first.”

In Brownsville, Sen. Cruz highlighted his efforts to further expand economic opportunity for every Texan.

“My priorities from day one in the Senate have been jobs and economic growth,” Sen. Cruz said. “Those are the priorities of Texans all across the state. Texans want more jobs, more opportunity, and higher wages. And we can achieve those priorities by lifting the regulatory burdens of Washington off the backs of small businesses, farmers, ranchers and job creators. By simplifying the tax code, and by repealing Obamacare, which has been the biggest job killer in the country. I am spending every waking moment, day and night, working to deliver on the promises made to the American people and to Texas families.”
