Sen. Cruz Continues Investigation into Administration’s Handling of Unaccompanied Alien Children

Sends letter to Secretary Kerry questioning inappropriate use of UAC funds among other concerns

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recently sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry asking more questions about a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) document that appears to contradict key aspects of the Administration’s policy regarding the handling of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC). This letter represents the latest step in Sen. Cruz’s thorough examination of the Administration’s multi-agency approach to last year’s UAC influx, and follows two prior letters to HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell on the subject:

  • Sen. Cruz’s March 31 letter to Secretary Burwell asking for general information about HHS’s handling of the UAC in its custody can be viewed here.
  • Sen. Cruz’s June 23 letter to Secretary Burwell asking for additional information about an HHS slideshow, which raised new questions about the agency’s awareness of UAC-related problems early in 2014, can be viewed here.

“Several weeks ago, I was given a document from the Department of Health and Human Services that raises even more questions about this Administration’s handling of the UAC influx, including questions about whether the Administration is being honest with the American people,” Sen. Cruz said. “The totality of the information I have makes it seem as if the Administration has been concealing its true understanding of the scope of the UAC problem from most of Congress, ignoring its own intelligence on the problem, and engaging in some creative accounting to avoid its enforcement duties.

“I have asked for additional information from Secretary Burwell, and I am now looking to hear from Secretary Kerry about the Department of State’s role in its handling, or mishandling, of the UAC issue.  I am looking forward to hearing from Secretaries Burwell and Kerry, and also looking forward to helping the American people obtain the accuracy and transparency they deserve.”
