Sens. Cruz, Cornyn Praise Senate Confirmation of Federal Judge for Brownsville

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) today released the following statements after the Senate confirmed Fernando Rodriguez, Jr. to fill a vacancy at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas – Brownsville Division:

“I am thrilled the Senate has overwhelmingly voted to confirm Fernando Rodriguez, Jr.,” Sen. Cruz said. “He has dedicated his life to the cause of justice, in particular, combatting the heinous crimes of modern day slavery and human trafficking around the world. I am confident his experience, diligence, and commitment to the rule of law will serve him and South Texans well as our newest federal district court judge.”

“Fernando’s tireless work combatting human trafficking shows his deep devotion to serving others,” said Sen. Cornyn. “The community will be well-served by having him return to his native south Texas, and  I am pleased that the Senate has voted to confirm him to this seat.”

Fernando Rodriguez, Jr., of Texas will serve as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Fernando Rodriguez currently works as a field office director in the Dominican Republic for International Justice Mission, where he leads efforts to combat sex trafficking of children. Mr. Rodriguez’s work has contributed to the rescue of more than 110 victims and 21 convictions of the perpetrators. Mr. Rodriguez previously led similar efforts against the sexual abuse of children in Bolivia. Before joining International Justice Mission, Mr. Rodriguez was a partner in the Dallas office of Baker Botts LLP, where his practice focused on commercial litigation. From 1997 to 1998, he served as a briefing attorney for Justice Nathan L. Hecht on the Supreme Court of Texas. Mr. Rodriguez earned his B.A. from Yale University and his J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law.
