ICYMI: Sen. Cruz: Texas’ Spirit of Unity Will See Us Through Harvey Recovery

Appears on Fox 26 and the Michael Berry Show to discuss rebuilding in Texas after devastation caused by Harvey

HOUSTON, Texas – On Thursday, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared on KRIV-Houston ‘Fox 26 News at 5pm’ and KTRH’s ‘Michael Berry Show,’ to discuss the path to recovery for Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey’s damage and destruction along Gulf Coast communities.

When asked about the Houston tour Sen. Cruz participated in with Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), on ‘Fox 26 News,’ Sen. Cruz discussed the personal impact of touring severely flooded areas:

“I have been spending every moment touring the gulf coast from the area that Harvey hit, and talking about 250 miles and visiting the communities today. The Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, was in town and so a number of Members of the Texas delegation took the Speaker and the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the House of Representatives on an aerial tour in a helicopter that went up the ship channel and showed the damage that was there. On that tour, we cut down along Brays Bayou and Buffalo Bayou and showing them, number one, the scope of the damage. It made a real impression on them as I showed them where Heidi and I lived. It really impacted how broad the geographic scope of disaster and suffering was in Houston. On that tour, we pointed street after street after street where you could see the debris on the front lawns and pull out the carpet, floor, sheet rock, and the whole lives. Houston is hurting. And Texas is hurting. It was valuable for the Speaker to see that firsthand and to underscore the need for continued, very significant federal resources to get Texans through this.”

On KTRH's Michael Berry Show in Houston, Sen. Cruz described his Houston tour and interaction of Texas homeowners, victims of Harvey:

“I’ve visited with communities like Victoria, Port Aransas, and Aransas Pass, Refugio, and all of the neighborhoods around Houston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange- it’s almost 250 miles of devastation. But I will say one of the interesting things, having visited many of these communities two or three times in the past couple of weeks, you can already see very major progress. Texans have been helping their fellow Texans to rebuild and recover. They’ve been pulling the sheet rock from houses, ripping up flooring, and throwing out the furniture that was ruined by floods. Texas has started to rebuild and that same spirit of unity and strength and love that we saw in the storm is what’s going to carry us through and rebuild. And we’ll come out stronger in the end.”
