Sen. Cruz Issues Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order Expanding Economic Sanctions Against North Korea

‘This decision is a step in the right direction to impose a real cost on Kim Jong-un for his reckless pursuit of destruction’

PASADENA, Texas – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s executive order granting expanded authority to the Treasury Department to enforce economic sanctions against North Korea:

“President Trump took decisive action today to cut off North Korea’s illicit financing. For decades, Pyongyang has circumvented sanctions through foreign trade networks and spurious front companies, with the consent and aid of third-party states. This decision is a step in the right direction to impose a real cost on Kim Jong-un for his reckless pursuit of destruction.

“As the Treasury Department takes steps to vigorously implement these new measures, we must substantiate that other nations are fulfilling their commitments. While we welcome the People’s Bank of China’s announcement to cut off financial ties to North Korea, we must be vigilant and ensure that China follows through, given its history of financing North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile pursuits.”
