Sen. Cruz: ‘No Democrat Has Disputed That Brett Kavanaugh Is Qualified to Serve on the Supreme Court’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) joined Fox News’ Sean Hannity to discuss the first and second day of Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings and Senate Democrats’ efforts to coordinate protests and disruptions. On Thursday, before the hearing began, Sen. Cruz appeared on ‘Fox & Friends’ and Houston’s ‘Sam Malone Show’ to discuss the hearings.

On ‘Hannity,’ Sen. Cruz discussed how the tactics used by his Democratic colleagues to delay the hearing will not ultimately derail Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“In two days of hearings on the Judiciary Committee, the Democrats have not laid a single glove on Brett Kavanaugh,” Sen. Cruz said to Hannity. “There’s been a lot of screaming, there’s been a lot of protesting, there’s been a lot of anger, and it’s really the reflection of the rage and fury we’re seeing on the far left. And you’re right; by all appearances, these protests are closely coordinated with the Democratic Senators. Indeed, yesterday Senator John Kennedy asked about this conference call between Democratic Senators and the protesters to disrupt the hearings and Dick Durbin, the Democrat from Illinois, he jumped in and said yep, we had a conference call. And he didn’t dispute that it was a coordinated effort. Yesterday, 70 people were arrested. But at the end of the day, the rage, the anger they’re having, they haven’t been able to give even a single argument that is going to derail this nomination. No Democrat has disputed that Brett Kavanaugh is qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. And they’re just really expressing the rage of the far left to Donald Trump. They’re mad that Trump won in 2016 and Hillary Clinton lost. Come October, we’re going to see Judge Kavanaugh become Justice Kavanaugh, and that’s a great victory for every one of us who cares about the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and our fundamental liberties.”

Today during his interview with ‘Fox & Friends,’ Sen. Cruz discussed his exchange with Judge Kavanaugh, noting they talked about the importance of federalism, separation of powers, free speech, and religious liberty because those are the issues that matter to Texans and Americans.

“The Democrats are getting their time to try to basically take shots at him and they have, I think, completely missed,” Sen. Cruz said to Ainsley Earhardt. “I think it is valuable when you have a Supreme Court nomination, it is a time to talk about issues that matter. I spent much of my time questioning for example, talking about the importance of federalism. Talking about the importance of separation of powers. Talking about the importance of freedom of speech and religious liberty and letting him describe some of the cases he’s handled and has had in those areas. I think that is valuable for the American public to have a discussion about why these issues matter and what this fight is really about. The Democrats aren’t going to tell you that. But I do feel a responsibility to focus on why these issues matter to Americans at home.”

When asked about the security risks of the protestors by Houston’s Sam Malone, Sen. Cruz praised the professionalism of the Capitol Police who have worked tirelessly to keep the hearings safe.

“In the hearing there are probably 15 or 20 Capitol Police there so that when someone stands up, they very quickly – if they’re disrupting the hearing – they’re arrested and they’re escorted out,” Sen. Cruz said to Malone. “Now these people are screaming and yelling. Some of them flop down and play dead and make the cops carry them out. And I will say the Capitol Police has done really an excellent job dealing with a difficult situation and doing it in a calm and professional but serious way. And so I don’t think there have been meaningful security threats, it’s just disrupted the ability to actually question the nominee and examine the record. And that’s they’re objective, to disrupt.”
