Sens. Cruz, Cornyn Praise the Nomination of John Bash as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas

September 8, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) today released the following statements after President Trump announced his intention to nominate John Bash as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas:

“John Bash is a brilliant lawyer who will be an outstanding United States Attorney,” said Sen. Cruz. “He is committed to the fair and effective enforcement of the law, and has the integrity, judgment, and skill necessary to serve the people of the Western District as its chief federal law enforcement officer. I was proud to recommend him for this position and I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will move quickly to confirm him.”

“Texans deserve a principled prosecutor with a record of accomplishment and commitment to upholding the law, and John fits the bill,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I was proud to join Senator Cruz in recommending him to the President, and together we’ll work to get him quickly confirmed by the Senate.”

John Franklin Bash is being nominated to serve as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas, which encompasses 68 counties in Texas covering approximately 93,000 square miles and an estimated population of 6.5 million people. Mr. Bash is currently a Special Assistant to the President and Associate Counsel to the President. From 2012 to 2017, he served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General in the United States Department of Justice. In that role, he argued ten cases on behalf of the United States in the Supreme Court, and he litigated or advised on numerous cases and other matters involving a range of federal legal questions, with a special emphasis on national security and criminal law. He previously was an associate attorney at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington, D.C., where his practice focused on complex litigation in Federal district and appellate courts. Mr. Bash clerked for the Honorable Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court and the Honorable Brett M. Kavanaugh of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He received his A.B., summa cum laude, from Harvard University and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

The Senators recommended Mr. Bash to President Trump following an extensive review and interview process of the candidate pool by the bipartisan Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee (FJEC). Sen. Cruz and Sen. Cornyn established the FJEC, a bipartisan panel of leading attorneys in Texas, to help identify the most qualified candidates to fill judicial and U.S attorney vacancies. The panel reviewed applications, interviewed candidates, and made recommendations to the Senators, who interviewed individuals before making their recommendations to the President.
