Cruz, Cornyn Support Major Disaster Declaration for Texas Flooding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) today sent a letter to President Obama, urging him to grant Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration for the recent severe weather and flooding that has affected Southeast Texas.
“We ask that you expedite the processing and approval of Governor Abbott’s request so that our affected communities and constituents, many of whom were in the midst of recovering from previously sustained severe weather events when this disaster struck, can rebuild anew and move beyond this tragedy,” the senators wrote.

Mr. President,
In the wake of the severe rain and devastating weather events in Southeast Texas and across our State, we are writing in support of Governor Greg Abbott’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding since April 17th, 2016. This severe weather has caused destruction of property and loss of life, and has left many Texans stranded or displaced.
We have been encouraged by the work of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deploy assistance to state and local officials to assess the severity of initial damages, consistent with efforts observed during major disaster events our state has faced in years past.
We ask that you expedite the processing and approval of Governor Abbott’s request so that our affected communities and constituents, many of whom were in the midst of recovering from previously sustained severe weather events when this disaster struck, can rebuild anew and move beyond this tragedy.
