KTRH: Ted Cruz: Subpoena Fight Over Religious Freedom

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has joined the fight against Houston's mayor and her administration's subpoenas of local churches who spoke out against her equal rights ordinance.

Flanked by dozens of area pastors, the Texas Republican echoed the state attorney general's demand that the Parker administration withdraw the subpoenas of sermons, emails and text messages which mention anything about homosexuality.

"Has it come to this?  That the government is demanding of the pastors we will scrutinize, we will use the power of government to determine if the sermons you preach on Sunday are acceptable in City Hall on Monday?" Cruz of hundreds gathered Thursday at Houston's First Baptist Church.

"This is a country that was formed centuries ago by people fleeing religious oppression, and seeking a land where you do not need to seek the permission of a king or queen, or president, or mayor to preach the word of God," he said.
