New York Daily News: Schumer Helps Cruz Pass Bill Banning Expected Iranian Ambassador to U.N. from Entering U.S.
Sen. Chuck Schumer formed an unlikely partnership with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) Monday to ease Senate passage of a bill banning Iran’s expected new ambassador to the United Nations from entering the United States.
The likely ambassador, Hamid Aboutalebi is accused of playing a prominent role in the 1979-1981 hostage crises in at the U.S. embassy in Tehran.
“I thought it was totally inappropriate that Mr. Aboutalebi was nominated in the first place,” Schumer said in a statement. “It may be a case of strange bedfellows, but I’m glad Senator Cruz and I were able to work out a bill that would prevent this terrorist from stepping foot on American soil."
Schumer wrote the State Department last week urging denial of Aboutalebi’s visa application.
