March 24, 2018

Greetings,

The entire Lone Star State joins both Austin and Schertz in breathing a little easier, now that the Austin, Round Rock, and Schertz Police Departments, Texas DPS, FBI, ATF, and other law enforcement agencies have identified the Austin bomber. We continue to pray for the families and the victims and remain ever grateful for local, state, and federal officials and their dedicated efforts to ensure the safety and security of our communities.

This week, I was gratified to address members of the Texas Farm Bureau and answer their questions. Our Texas farmers and ranchers are concerned about the direction of our trade policies. I outlined my priorities for NAFTA renegotiation, which is crucially important to not only our farmers and ranchers but the entire state. On Wednesday, I sent a letter to President Trump with my colleagues Sens. Cory Gardner and Steve Daines, urging him to direct his trade negotiators to take a much broader view of the economic potential of NAFTA negotiations and advance the Republican economic growth agenda by prioritizing American jobs and competitiveness.

This week, I voted against the $1.3 trillion spending bill, which, among other disasters, includes funding for Planned Parenthood, sanctuary cities, and the Ex-Im bank, and fails to properly secure our border and reduce funding for the EPA. Though the overall bill is truly a monstrosity, there were several victories. I was glad to fight against even more egregious proposals that were seriously considered, including a multi-billion dollar bailout of Obamacare, an Internet sales tax, and passenger facility charge, which would have driven up the cost of every airline ticket. I am grateful to see our military fully funded, and the passage of the Taylor Force Act. The American people voted overwhelmingly for Republicans to change Washington, yet Congress continues to do the exact opposite. I will continue to fight for a better path, one that respects the will of the American people, who sent us here to fight for fiscal sanity.

My Senate office continues to work to ensure swift and effective service to Texans and Texas communities in need of federal assistance following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. If you need additional information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or utilize the federal and state resources listed here.

Please read below for an update from this last week.

Keep Texas Strong,
